This year marks the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. This was the council where our Nicene Creed was formulated. This creed sought to summarise, in a short text, who God is. As part of this summary, it describes the identity of Jesus: the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father and consubstantial with him.
This description may seem like
a very philosophical way to talk about Jesus. While it remains important to clarify rationally who Jesus is, each of us is called to know Jesus personally. Jesus wants us to have a relationship with him as our saviour, in a way that changes our lives. Therefore, this question in the Gospel of Matthew is still as relevant today as it was back then: Who is Jesus for you?
With Jesus as a loving presence by your side in prayer, you can ask these questions:
Who is Jesus in your everyday life? What invitation is he giving you to grow and mature in friendship with him?
