This week, we will be talking about mission. Jesus sends out 72 disciples into Samaria (or 70 in some manuscripts). Previously in this gospel, Jesus sent out the 12 apostles into Galilee. The number 70 or 72 may represent the 70 elders that Moses selected to be his helpers in leading the people. Another connection is that, at the time the gospel was written, it was believed that 72 was
the total number of nations in the world. The good news of God’s love that Jesus brings is to be shared with all people. God has no favourites, indeed God loves and derives great joy from all that God has created.
Jesus sends them out “in pairs”. When there are so many people to reach, would more people not be reached if they went singly? However, in pairs, they could support each other, perhaps express the message more clearly, and be
an example of love and cooperation. Do I feel strengthened by having a partner when travelling and delivering an important message? Like the disciples of Jesus’ time, we are called to share the message of God’s love, presence, and action with others through our words, actions, and attitudes. Now is the time, as we are called by our gospel this week.
As in those times “the harvest is rich, but the labourers are few”. We are all called
to be labourers in harvesting souls for God’s embrace of love.
What can I do or be today to fulfil my role to teach others about the great love of God?
How do my attitudes, words and actions indicate that I include all regardless of how they may be different from me or my group?
Who will help me when it feels difficult to do my bit on my own?
