Jesus’ answer to Martha continues – that only one thing is needed, and that her sister, Mary, has chosen this good thing, which will not be taken away from her: being in the presence of Jesus and listening to his teaching. This does not mean that serving Jesus, as Martha did, is not important. It means work and service should flow out of our time spent in the presence of Jesus and listening to
his teachings.
Jesus says, “Everyone, then, who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.” (Matthew 7:24) The invitation, therefore, is that we should firstly spend time in his presence and his word and then act on them. We can do that by spreading the word of Jesus and by performing acts of mercy. And all this should be done in love.
Martha was performing an act of mercy, but forgot to start in the presence of Jesus and his teachings. We need to do both, and we should encourage others to do the same.
I know when I haven't spent enough time in Jesus’ presence and teachings: I become exhausted more easily, leading to an adverse reaction towards others in my emotions, thoughts, words, and actions. And the negativity even gets turned inward
towards myself. I therefore find it helpful to take time out, such as a quiet day by myself in nature, or a calm morning retreat, and, if possible, a weekend retreat. This certainly recharges my spiritual and emotional batteries, strengthening me to be better and do better for others.
