While Jesus is teaching others about the Kingdom of God, a man interrupts him, asking that he settle a dispute about an inheritance. Jesus refuses, but takes the opportunity to teach about the dangers of greed. The parable of the rich fool emphasises the importance of spiritual wealth, which involves building a relationship with and being “rich toward” God.
Very often, we are inclined to focus on material wealth, whether in the form of possessions or financial wealth. The desire for a flashy car, a big house, fashionable clothing and extravagant holidays is at the forefront of numerous minds. The proverbial “keeping up with the Joneses” is a reality for many people. But at what expense?
Jesus tells us that storing up earthly possessions is futile
and insignificant, especially in the face of death. These so-called treasures are temporary and meaningless, and distract us from developing our relationship with God. These treasures bring false security and hope while a rich spiritual life ensures God’s blessings of generosity, mercy and love.
What treasures are you accumulating and storing?
How can you focus more on spiritual growth and
treasures?
