We can look at this parable and think that the farmer was successful, wise, and responsible. His fields had yielded an abundance of crops, and he had surplus reserves for years to come. He was planning and saving for the future. He had worked hard and could now sit back and enjoy the fruits of his hard work. Smart move!
This is what
we are taught, too, by our parents, grandparents and society in general. We are told that if we work hard, we will reap the rewards and our future will be bright and secure. The mindset of accumulating wealth as a symbol of security is prevalent in certain cultures and generations.
God had blessed this farmer with land that “yielded an abundant harvest” as well as the workers to assist in working the land. These blessings continued,
but the farmer was focused on the increasing crops and accumulating wealth. He extended the farm buildings and planned for his future. The more his yield increased, the greedier he became. Notice his use of “I” in these verses. He forgot about his helpers. He forgot about God. He showed no gratitude and didn’t share or use his success to further the will of God. He forgot to be a blessing to others and to build the kingdom of God.
How has God blessed you? In what new ways can you extend gratitude to God and others for the blessings in your life?
