Elizabeth was a humble woman who was surprised that, somehow, she was part of what was happening. Perhaps thoughts like “I am not worthy to be part of what is happening,” or “I am not important to be witness to all of this.” Elizabeth probably thought that somebody with more societal importance, influence and power would be more worthy of such a visit. She might not have fully understood what
all of this meant; however, she knew that this was not an insignificant moment.
The Lord comes to us every day of our lives. At times, we miss these moments because we are not aware that it is the Lord. This might be due to day-to-day busyness. Sometimes, even when we know it is the Lord, we ignore the visit because we do not believe that we are worthy of the personal attention.
St Ignatius Loyola reminds us that we are always in the presence of the Lord. We just need to be aware and pay attention to this presence and then respond.
The Lord comes to me today. Am I aware of the Lord's presence? How might I be more attentive? How do I respond to his presence in my life today?
