The reading from Acts tells of Peter and John’s continued determination to tell the story of Jesus to anyone who cared to stop and listen, no matter the cost.
The Apostles had already been arrested and jailed for telling their story, and God had responded by sending his messenger to free them. Instead of running away, they picked up
and continued to witness, with incredible courage, to Jesus’ love and action, just as God had instructed them to do. They knew it would probably get them into further trouble, but they did not let that deter them.
Continuing to tell their story led to their further arrest, intense interrogation, physical punishment, and a serious threat to stop. When they were eventually released, instead of being miserable, they were filled with joy
that there was once again the opportunity to keep going.
What drove these men to keep giving of themselves?
They had witnessed Jesus' death and resurrection first-hand. They had also experienced the love and grace of Jesus’ interaction personally. The power of those experiences was all they needed to witness Jesus’ love compellingly.
So, how does this reading tie in with the gospel reading from yesterday?
When we experience the love and grace of Jesus in our lives, something shifts within us. The more our relationship with Jesus grows, the more profound that inner shift is.
It enabled John to recognise his friend on the shore and Peter to abandon his
nets and step out with courage to tell their Jesus story.
What is your Jesus story?
Have you had an opportunity to share it with others as yet?
Could today be the day?
