Jesus makes a glorious and spectacular promise to the “sheep”. Those who hear his voice and recognise it as the voice of their shepherd will be safe forever. He will look after them; even death, the last great enemy, cannot harm them.
When I read these words of Jesus, I am drawn to the concluding words of the Lord’s Prayer: “For
thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.”
What reassuring words in our day! Something we all need to reflect on deeply.
Paul prays for the Christians in Ephesus: “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and
his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.” (Ephesians 1:18-21)
Think back over the last while in your life and experience:
What have you experienced or witnessed in others around you that is evidence of this incomparably great power of God?
Where do you desire God to exert his great power in your life now (Jesus himself said, “Ask and you will receive.”)
