We celebrate Pentecost, one of the most important feasts in the church, marking the conclusion of our 50-day celebration of the Easter season. On Pentecost, the Church was born through the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is the Paraclete, our advocate, the one who pleads our cause. The Holy Spirit is our defender in times of
trials, our comforter, our vindicator, the one who bears witness in us to Christ’s message of salvation. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of truth.
Jesus says he came into the world to testify to the truth and that everyone who belongs to the truth listens to this voice (John 18:37). In this era of fake news and post-truth that we are living in, what is the truth? What is this truth that Jesus had come to testify to? Do we belong to this
truth?
Jesus tells his disciples that they will be able to keep his commandments if they love him. This could help us to begin to respond to what truth is. The Holy Spirit will lead us to the truth and remind us of all that Jesus has taught us—his commandments and his ways. The Holy Spirit will help us to see that all that Jesus taught is right and transcends time and generations.
I invite you to ask the Holy Spirit to help you see where you have ignored the ways of the Lord, and ask that the Spirit lead you to the fullness of truth.
