The great stories of cinema—like Gladiator or Rocky—celebrate the brave struggle against the odds. We naturally cheer for someone who battles on and eventually triumphs; there is something noble in that effort.
In the spiritual life, we admire those who pour themselves out in love. However, we are also reminded
that all our efforts are a response to God’s love for us. God is the source of our energy, our talents, and the clarity of mind we rely on.
When Jesus asks us to stand firm, he is not asking us to do it alone. We cannot persevere without him. Sometimes we cannot even see the path forward unless he shows it to us.
As we walk with the Lord this week, we can ask for the grace
to cooperate more deeply with his Spirit. What areas of my life most need God’s care and strength?
