Both Lazarus and the rich man died. Jesus makes it clear that Lazarus was immediately taken to heaven to Abraham’s bosom. Lazarus, who, in his diseased earthly life, had had to beg for scraps of food, is given the place of highest honour, reclining in the “bosom of Abraham.” The rich man, on the other hand, was immediately taken to Hades—the place of eternal torment.
Perhaps the rich man thought he still had time, or worse, that because of his wealth, he was already blessed and in right standing with God.
In this parable, Jesus shows us that it is one thing to have faith, but we also need to live our faith. The rich man was a Jew, as was Lazarus. They both believed and followed their faith, yet the rich man did not live his faith by being charitable. This
brings to mind the Pharisee who prayed, thanking God that he is not like the publican next to him. The publican humbly prayed for God to have mercy on him.
God sees the hearts and minds of everyone, especially the hearts of believers.
What do I need to bring to God and ask for the grace of mercy for?
How can I live with more
faith and acts of mercy, to be ready when I am called into eternity?
