In a message delivered for the International Day of Mathematics on 13 March, Pope Leo XIV invited mathematicians and educators to see their discipline as a source of hope for the world. His reflection is particularly meaningful for those who began their journey, as he did, as young mathematics teachers seeking to guide the next generation.

Before entering the priesthood, Robert Francis Prevost—now Pope Leo XIV—studied mathematics at Villanova University and later taught mathematics and physics to high school students in Chicago. This early experience shaped his understanding that mathematics is not merely a technical subject but a discipline that forms the mind, cultivates intellectual honesty, and develops the capacity for rigorous thinking. For young students, mathematics is often the first structured encounter with logic, order, and the discovery that the universe is intelligible.
