There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. And sitting down, they kept watch over him there. Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is Jesus, the king of the Jews. (Matthew 27:34-37)

Unfaltering Perseverance

We see in the narrative of Jesus’ passion, great and unfaltering perseverance. Jesus is interrogated, tortured, ridiculed and publicly humiliated, but he stays true to who he is and to his mission.

One can only imagine that this perseverance in distress and pain flowed from his unshakable love for his Father and his unswerving obedience. Jesus’ deep belief in his calling and his eagerness and enthusiasm to make God’s dream for his Creation a reality would have also strengthened his steadfast perseverance.

Consider how you fare in the ups and downs of your life and ministry. 
How do you react when things go against you? When you feel the discomfort and pain of your circumstances?
Have you been able to behave with integrity and strength when your faith has been tested or your calling questioned?

 

Lord,
 I realise just how often my perseverance falters, my resolve weakens, and I fail in my calling.
Help me to be more like you,
and endure the discomfort, distress and pain
that comes with following you faithfully.
Amen.
