I want to end this week by returning once again to Thomas, because I believe there is a Thomas in each of us as we journey through our lives of faith.
Thomas was not present when Jesus first appeared to the disciples. For some reason, Thomas had chosen to withdraw from his Christian community. Various kinds of hurt
and fear can lead to isolation if not managed well. We can miss something of great value when we separate ourselves and try to go it alone. God intended for us to be a community that is aware of one another and reaches out to those in pain.
Thomas was also resolute about not simply agreeing to something. He would not be the type of person to simply recite a creed that made no sense to him. He encourages us to be honest about
what we do not understand and careful about what we accept as truth. Then, having received what Jesus had to teach him, he was sent to share it with the world.
May we, like Thomas, come to value our Christian community and be honest in seeking the truth. May we receive with willing hearts what Jesus entrusts to us and be mobilised into action.
