Why doesn’t Jesus just reveal himself to the two disciples? Why does he act like a stranger? And, in the same vein, if God wants us to follow him and be part of his Kingdom, why doesn’t he just show us who he is? Why the big “secret”?
We must turn to the Bible. The Scriptures are not about us. They are all about
Jesus Christ and preparing us for his coming. The Scriptures are the prologue, so to speak, of the story that will unfold when the time is right. They teach us how to be followers of Christ, how to be Christ-like and how forgiveness and salvation come through Christ. The Scriptures tell us of God’s plan for our lives.
Our faith should be built on the Scriptures, not on seeing Jesus. We have been given all we need, and God
encourages us to believe in him as a result. Jesus wants the foundation of our faith to be the scriptures, not his appearance. “Then their eyes were opened, and they recognised him, and he disappeared from their sight.” (Luke 24:31)
“Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32) This is exactly what should be happening in all of us as we live the
Scriptures. When our hearts are open to God’s word, we can be transformed in mind, body and spirit. We will understand and experience God's abundant love. We will be excited to go out and spread the Good News.
