We live in a time filled with many voices. Some are loud, persuasive, and urgent, each asking for our attention, our agreement, or our allegiance. It is not always easy to know which voices to trust.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers a different image of leadership. The sheep do not follow because they are
pressured or persuaded, but because they recognise his voice. There is familiarity, a quiet knowing that draws them forward.
This raises a simple but searching question: which voices am I learning to recognise?
Not every loud voice is true. Not every message that unsettles or excites us is leading us well. Some voices stir fear,
urgency, or division. Others invite patience, clarity, and a deeper sense of connection.
Discernment, then, is not only about what we hear but about what we allow to shape us over time. At times, this may require us to step back from the noise around us so that we can more clearly notice what is shaping us within.
The voices we follow
do more than guide our daily decisions; they shape the kind of people we become. Over time, they form how we see ourselves, others, and God.
The invitation today is not only to listen, but to discern.
Which voices am I giving authority to? And where are they leading me?
What is
shaping my inner world?
Who am I allowing to guide my steps?
