Jesus is telling us to look at the works that he has done during his life. These are a clear indication that he and the Father are one. Preaching, teaching, healing the sick, pointing out evil and hypocrisy, reconciling people, and raising the dead all indicate that Jesus is working on behalf of God. This programme of mercy and helping souls is often known as “the Kingdom of
God.”
When we do similar things to Jesus, we are also advancing the Kingdom of God. We are also close to the Father when we promote reconciliation and peace in our times. Even though we might not be doctors or psychologists, when we help people to overcome their emotional wounds, grief, or divisions, we are helping the Father to heal broken people. This takes compassion and love, which are not evident in all the people we
encounter. When we point out prejudice and hate speech, racism and xenophobia, corruption and nepotism, then we are advancing the Kingdom of God. How much more so, if our actual actions push back these social and personal ills?
Nobody can ever claim to be perfect, as Jesus is perfect. But we can do our best to imitate him, so that other people might know that there is a loving God who wishes people to be “in” him.
In my own home and professional environment, how can I do the works that Jesus did?
How am I making the Kingdom of God come on Earth?
Who most needs to hear Jesus’ message of love, forgiveness and reconciliation?
