Jesus responded to the dismayed Jews, reinforcing his seriousness by repeating the word ‘truly’. We can imagine that he emphasised the word ‘I’, the Son of Man and by implication, the Son of God. I am saying to you, I am serious about this—you will have no life in you if you do not partake in consuming my body and
blood.
This seems to be a call to the Jews to engage and try to find out what Jesus really means by these words. It is an opportunity to find out who Jesus really is by engaging with him, questioning him, and asking him to make them understand what he means. It is a call to find out and understand what Jesus had been teaching all along, that he was the Son of Man, the Son of God. It is a call to believe that he is
the doorway to life in God, and by extension, that he is the doorway to eternal life.
Do we take the time to engage with Jesus and find out who he is?
Do we partake in his body and blood, believing that it is Jesus who gives us life in its fullness here on earth?
Do we believe that Jesus is truly the doorway to
eternal life?
