What, for us, is the message in this text? God called John to testify that Jesus is the Messiah, the Lamb of God, God’s chosen one. John was the witness and the voice. His focus was on promoting Jesus and demoting himself. Jesus has been revealed to us, and we have the opportunity to encounter him in his whole identity.
John’s
testament and conviction that Jesus was the Messiah must have come as a surprise to some. Perhaps people were expecting the Son of God to appear with pomp and ceremony, wearing expensive clothes. Jesus appeared as a humble man, similar to many, but so different from the world.
We are called to be a witness and to be different from the world. As a voice, we are empowered by the Holy Spirit and our faith, actions and words cast
light on and draw attention to Jesus.
How can you be a witness today?
How does Jesus appear to you today?
