Jesus began his public ministry at this time, after moving to Capernaum. He fulfilled God’s purpose for him by preaching to the people of Israel. This verse highlights the call to repent and align with God’s will.
Jesus starts his ministry with the same message that John the Baptist preached: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven
has come near”. The difference, though, is that John was preparing the people of Israel for the coming of the Messiah, while Jesus delivered the same message as the Messiah. Jesus called for repentance and also for the people to follow him, the Son of God.
Both Jesus and John the Baptist underlined the importance of repenting of sins and of changing one's lifestyle to follow Christ as precursors to participating in God’s Kingdom.
