“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” (Matthew 4:19)
 

Matthew 4:12-23

I remember hearing this verse as a child and wondering aloud how it’s possible to fish for people. It made no sense to me at all-you cannot fish for people, only for fish, crabs, eels and the odd “surprise”. What was Jesus really saying?

Peter, Andrew, James and John are invited into discipleship and called to change their focus from fish to people. They are to share their faith and bring others to follow Christ. The prize catch is bringing people into God’s Kingdom. 

This call is for all of us. When we follow Jesus, we are called into his service. Our mission is to make God’s Word known to others and to share Jesus’ teachings through our words and actions.

How are you “fishing for people”?

Is there anybody you could bring to Jesus today?
 

Dear Lord,
Thank you for calling me. Thank you for trusting me to be your disciple. Guide me as I set out to “fish for people”.
