Last Sunday, we reflected on the Beatitudes—Jesus' “blueprint” for blessedness in the Kingdom: the poor in spirit, the merciful, the peacemakers, those who hunger for justice. These are not mere ideals; they form the foundation of who we are called to be as disciples.
Today, the Gospel continues directly: "You are the salt of the
earth... You are the light of the world." Jesus shifts from inner attitudes to outward mission. Can you imagine a saltless salt? A lightless light?
This is the paradox of a disciple who forgets their identity. Salt without savour, light without radiance—such things are inconceivable, absurd. Yet Jesus warns that this can happen to us if we fail to live our calling, thereby losing sight of who we truly are.
Who are we? Jesus gives us a new identity: “You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.” He describes not merely what we should do, but what we are—through baptism and our union with Christ. This is the heart of Christian identity. We cannot remain mere spectators in the world; to stand by passively is to become saltless and lightless.
Where do I shy away from being salt and
light?
Where is God inviting me to shine for others this week?
Who in my life needs the flavour of hope, encouragement, or healing that I can offer?
