Jesus describes the function of the disciples, “You are the light of the world”. Light is the opposite of darkness. Light illuminates, making the unseen seen and showing the way. There are many references to light throughout the Bible, where the word is used as a metaphor for goodness. Jesus told the disciples that they would reveal and show God’s goodness and bring light to the world's
darkness.
Jesus calls the disciples to stand out like a beacon. As I write this, I imagine a lighthouse sending its strong beams far out across the dark ocean, visible to the boats and ships on the horizon. Or a spotlight that follows the main character of a play across the stage, highlighting their every move and facial expression. We are called to be this kind of light in the world, not hidden or dim. As Christians living in God’s
Kingdom, we are the light of Jesus, and it shines through us as we are the example of God’s goodness. Jesus’ light, shining through us, is drawing people to know more. We will enjoy the abundant blessings of unity and harmony.
We are to live in the light, be the light and live God’s light for all the world to see and to bring glory to God.
How is God’s light shining in and
through me?
How can I be an example of God’s goodness?
