This text is about influence, identity and responsibility. Salt and light describe identity and then action. Jesus says, “You are...” not “You should be…”.
As Christians, we are the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world.” Jesus has given us this very important title and role. Just as salt preserves and brings out
flavour, so we are called preserve God’s goodness in our world and bring God’s values to all. We must be involved in our communities and workplaces, retaining our “saltiness” and distinctiveness.
As the “light of the world”, we are called to bring glory to God, not only with what we say but also through what we do. People watch us and listen to what we say, and these things must glorify our Lord. We often come across people who
do not go to church and don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus. Our role and responsibility is to be Christ-like so that onlookers know that all we have, say and do comes from God; they will see God in us.
Jesus is telling his disciples (and us) that their lives matter, that their presence changes environments, that their faith must be visible and active, and that their actions should reflect God’s character.
Is my faith visible in concrete acts of love?
Does my life point people toward God—or toward myself?
