The temptation Jesus experienced in the desert helps us to recognise the temptation in our own lives. Temptations are deceptions by the devil; they are often subtle, reasonable and attractive. The devil uses good things like comfort, safety and success to deceive us; to get us to move away from trusting God and instead rely on our own limited capabilities. This is evident in Jesus' experience
in the desert.
We try to turn stones into bread when we seek quick fixes to our challenges instead of waiting patiently in faith. We test God by expecting help without responsibility and by thinking that God is not with us when we are suffering. We are also tempted by power, control, authority, and the desire for approval.
Lent is the best time to pause and reflect on the
temptations we face. These will not go away because we are good or religious people. During those times when we are tired, stressed, or feeling empty, they will come.
Jesus’ experience in the desert also shows us that it is possible to resist temptation and to stay faithful to God. We cannot overcome our weaknesses on our own; willpower alone is not enough. We are invited to rely on God through prayer, Scripture and complete trust.
When we do, we are reassured that the angels will come and minister to us, as they did to Jesus. We are not alone.
How may I keep myself nourished by the word of God this Lent?
How can I learn to trust God more concretely?
