The Gospel tells us that the Samaritan woman left her water jar at the well and went to tell the people in the town about Jesus. This small detail is revealing. When do we ever drop what we are doing and rush off to do something else?
Usually, it happens after an important encounter. Something shifts within us. What seemed urgent a moment before suddenly fades, and a
new priority comes into view.
This is what happens to the Samaritan woman. In meeting Jesus, she discovers something greater than the water she came to draw. Jesus touches her deepest thirst and reveals himself as the source of the life she is seeking. In that moment, her perspective changes.
So, she leaves her jar and goes immediately back to the town. The encounter with
Jesus fills her with such joy that she cannot keep it to herself. She wants others to meet the one who has changed her life.
Lent invites us to be open to the same kind of encounter. If we allow Jesus to deepen our relationship with him, Easter can become more than a celebration we observe. It can become the joy of discovering anew what Christ is doing in our lives and in the world.
With this in mind, we might take a moment today to reflect:
How is my relationship with Jesus at this moment?
What keeps me from recognising him as the source of my peace and joy?
Where might the Spirit be inviting me to “leave my jar” and share the good news with others?
