Jesus makes his plan to rescue and restore all the destruction he sees around him. He approaches his disciples and instructs them to “ask the Lord of the harvest... to send out workers”. Jesus understands the vastness of the harvest, the extent of the task before him and the need for helpers. Imagine how Jesus was probably noticing the need long before this moment and quietly,
inwardly asking his Father for a plan of action. Asking his Father what he wants him to do about this.
We notice how hearts of compassion reach out to God for a solution rather than inwardly to themselves. Jesus teaches the disciples to go to the Lord of the harvest with their feelings of desperation, aimlessness, uncertainty, and hopelessness—with all their concerns. But also, with their hopes and dreams and their plans. We
notice how Jesus identifies with them and goes with them to their Father with a plea for assistance.
Then he instructs those he has already called to join him in his request for a solution.
Yesterday, we joined Jesus in seeing the brokenness and need around him and in considering our own need for salvation and re-creation. Now consider
the prayerful approach to the problem that Jesus implements. How do you approach matters like this in your own life, in the ups and downs of your own ministry or that of your community?
