After earnest prayer, the solution became apparent.
Jesus calls “his twelve disciples to him and gives them authority”.
Is it not amazing that the ‘Lord of the harvest’ shows Jesus that the solution is right there in front of
him, in just a small, ill-equipped, disorganised bunch of men? Think of how they had already been called by Jesus, by name, individually. He had already begun to teach and equip them. He had already amply demonstrated the work of driving out darkness and healing the destruction of evil.
Now he authorises them to do the work they have seen him doing, and sends them out as a little ‘ministry team’.
I wonder how they felt at that moment, looking back over the ‘harvest’? Perhaps they thought that Jesus would manage everything on his own. Now they hear his plea for help and find themselves authorised to tackle this vast job alongside their Master! They are only a few, but together they would begin the work.
