In 2 Kings 4:8-16, we read about a woman of faith who recognised Elisha as a prophet of God and wished to care for him. She encouraged her husband to construct a little room on the roof of their house, which meant he had a private entrance, and she sensibly equipped it so Elisha could sleep, read and pray. It was a wonderful gift of love. Beyond that, she demonstrated great respect
for him in the way she conducted herself. This must surely be the way one might offer a love gift to God himself.
When we honour God in this way, God’s reward is love beyond our wildest dreams.
The woman who cared so deeply for Elisha held a deep sadness. Her husband was old, and she had no living son to care for her in her old age. God saw that
she did not let her sadness make her bitter; rather, she continued to love others in her own special way. God brings the woman’s plight to Elisha’s attention and tasks him with explaining what God would do about it. This kind, humble woman struggled with the immensity of God’s gift. We all do when God makes the impossible possible. But that is what God does. God answers love with love.
