“All things have been committed” to Jesus. Jesus has been given complete power and authority to reveal God to people on earth, those whom he chooses. In other words, we cannot come to know God by our human intellect alone. Jesus is the only way to know and have a relationship with God: a gracious and divine gift to us.
This passage reveals something about the relationship between God the Father and Jesus the Son. God knows everything, and God truly knows Jesus. Jesus not only knows what the Father knows, but he is also the only one who knows the Father intimately. There are no secrets between the two. They are the only two who know each other as well as they do. With his Father’s permission, Jesus chooses whom to reveal his Father to.
Father and Son are united, with the Holy Spirit, in the Trinity. They are interconnected, yet also distinct from each other. We know the Father differently from the way Jesus does. God makes himself known to us through Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
When we become a disciple of Jesus, we are welcomed and share in the friendship with Jesus and the Father. We get to see and understand
what God is really like because Jesus has revealed him to us. We are being invited into a deeper relationship and fellowship with God.
