Jesus’ yoke allows us, his followers, to live under his way of life rather than under the stressors and pressures that weigh us down. The invitation is not another demand on us. Instead, it is an alternative way of living. An invitation to reorder our lives in accordance with the Father’s love, trust, compassion, and justice. We are being invited to live from a place of belonging and
to learn to become like Christ.
As followers of Jesus, we are called to be humble, compassionate, patient, and of service to others in our homes, workplaces, churches, and communities. This can be a challenge in a world that recognises and rewards power, success and self-promotion.
Jesus offers the inner peace and rest that come
from knowing that we are God’s beloved. We are not promised a challenge- or suffering-free life. We are promised that Jesus walks alongside us in our challenges and suffering. We do not face the hardships alone. The weight of our overwhelm and circumstances is transformed by Christ’s presence.
This past Sunday’s Gospel text reminds us that Jesus invites us to walk with him, learn from him, rest in him and
trust him. Entering into a relationship with Jesus, who is gentle, humble and life-giving, leads to everlasting and abundant life.
What burden is Jesus inviting me to release into his care?
What does walking alongside Jesus look like in my daily life?
How can I share Christ's gentleness and compassion with
those who are weary?
